Four people have been killed after a light aircraft crashed into a restaurant and caught fire in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, according to The Metro. Firefighters confirmed that the pilot and three passengers died in the accident, which took place shortly after 10.30am local time. The victims included a couple who were travelling on board the Piper Malibu aircraft, which had flown in from Sao Paulo.

The plane came down while approaching Capao da Canoa Airport and is reported to have struck a pole near the end of the runway before smashing into the restaurant, which was located in a built-up residential area.

Because the restaurant was still closed at the time of the crash, no casualties were reported on the ground. Video footage from the scene showed at least two people narrowly escaping injury as the aircraft descended.

Flames were seen rising from the roof of the building, with a thick column of black smoke visible over the area.

According to The Metro, residents living near the crash site were evacuated by Civil Defence teams shortly after the incident. Local officials confirmed that a nearby shop, which was also closed, sustained damage.

Rio Grande do Sul state governor Eduardo Leite said he had been monitoring the situation from the very beginning and that all security forces had been fully mobilised in response.

Civil Defence spokesperson Sabrina Rimas confirmed that neighbouring properties were evacuated quickly and without injury. She added that firefighters and the Military Brigade arrived promptly to tackle the blaze and secure the surrounding area.

The crash took place less than 24 hours after a separate light aircraft accident near the city of Puebla in central Mexico, in which four people also lost their lives.
