New Jersey Governor Chris Christie Announces Renovation Of 'Shameful' Statehouse

Chris Christie unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for the 2016 US Presidential Polls.

Trenton:

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie says work will begin immediately on a complete renovation of the "shameful" statehouse.

The Republican Governor said on Tuesday that staff will be moved into other office space by July for a four-year, $300 million project.

He says the current condition of the statehouse is "shameful" and notes the statehouse hasn't had a major upgrade since 1958. Parts of the building date to the 18th century.

He says the part of the building used by the executive branch doesn't have fire sprinklers and there are a number of code violations.

Mr Christie made the announcement at the Statehouse Rotunda.

Mr Christie says workers and tourists shouldn't have to worry about safety in the building.

He says the portion of the building used by the Legislature won't be affected.
