Nearly 50 injured in Germany train crash
Berlin: Nearly 50 people were injured when a regional train derailed after hitting a car in eastern Germany on Tuesday, police said.

The train crashed into the car that was hit by another vehicle and pushed onto the tracks in Lauterbach, between Leipzig and Chemnitz, said federal police spokesman Torsten Henkel.

The driver of the car managed to get out before the accident, but the train couldn't stop in time, Henkel said.

He said three of the train cars derailed and one tipped over on its side, injuring nine people seriously. Another 40 people received minor injuries.

Rescue crews were on the scene and helicopters flew the most seriously injured to local hospitals for treatment.

German railway operator Deutsche Bahn says train traffic has been rerouted.
