Informal Police Kill Town Police Chief in Mexico
Mexico City: Dozens of vigilante-like "community police" in southern Mexico have stormed into the office of a police chief and shot him to death, after trying to detain him for alleged links to a criminal gang.

A leader of the community police said on Friday that police chief Miguel Gutierrez opened fire on the men from a nearby area who were trying to detain him in the village of Tlacoachistlahuaca.

Community police leader Eliseo Villar said the men returned fire, killing Gutierrez.

It is unclear whether community police are authorised to detain public servants. Guerrero state gives such groups some law enforcement powers, but only in their own communities and for minor crimes.

Villar said Gutierrez was accused of burying bodies in clandestine pits.

Guerrero state prosecutors said the shooting occurred on Thursday.
