Dramatic rescue of man from swollen river

Rockhampton (Australia): The remnants of Tropical Cyclone Tasha continued to produce showers and thunderstorms across the Australian state of Queensland on Sunday.

Northern and central areas of the state were inundated with rain, with many areas suffering from severe flooding.

In Rockhampton, one man had a lucky escape after getting stranded in the middle of rushing floodwaters.

He and a friend were attempting to cross a creek, when they were swept off their feet by the fast-flowing water.

The friend managed to scramble to the bank and alert the emergency services, who eventually managed to drag the trapped man to safety.

Rockhampton, Townsville and Mackay had the heaviest rain falls, with more than 10 centimetres (4 inches) of rain recorded over 24 hours.

The cyclone left many areas along the coast flooded and some towns cut off due to flooded roads.

The towns of Theodore, west of Bundaberg, and Ingham in the north may be cut off for days, authorities said.
