Dhaka: A narrow lane blocked at both ends by two armoured cars, teaming with security personnel keeping well back, and the whiplash sound of round after round of gunfire. A two-and-half minute video brings home Friday night's horror at the Dhaka cafe and the 11-hour siege to flush out the terrorists.

More than 100 commandos had taken part in the operation, in which two policemen had earlier died.

The seven terrorists -- who the Bangladesh government claims were from a banned homegrown militant organisation, the Jamaat-Ul Mujahideen, working under the instructions of Pakistan's military spy agency ISI -- had holed up at the Holey Artisan Bakery, a popular eatery at the posh Guilshan area.

They had captured, tortured and slaughtered 20 hostages, among them an Indian student, 19-year-old Tarishi Jain. The rest included 9 Italians, 7 Japanese, one US national and two persons from Bangladesh.

Most of them were killed with machates - a weapon associated with Jamaat-style killings.

Six of the terrorists were gunned down by Saturday morning. The seventh one was captured - a top official said he "chickened out" and possibly held the "key" to the matter.

Both ISIS and Al Qaeda had claimed responsibility for the attacks. But Bangladesh denied the presence of any ISIS cells in the country and said the group was trying to get international attention by claiming responsibility.
