Nepal celebrated Kukur Puja, the second day of the Tihar festival, also known as Diwali, by honouring dogs with flower garlands, treats and vermillion marks on their foreheads. Pet owners and devotees across the country performed rituals for both pet and stray dogs. At the Armed Police Force canine centre in Kathmandu, handlers honoured their service dogs before showcasing their skills in demonstrations. In Hindu tradition, dogs are believed to be messengers of Yamraj, the god of death, and worshipping them is said to please him.
