European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the European Union must move beyond “reactive crisis management” as instability in the Middle East continues to impact global security and trade. Speaking at an informal summit in Cyprus, she said disruptions in key waterways like the Strait of Hormuz directly affect Europe’s economy and energy security. Von der Leyen said the EU could help repair war-damaged energy infrastructure and build alternative energy routes to reduce dependence on the Strait of Hormuz. Syria’s interim President Ahmed Alsharaa also stressed stronger Euro-Arab cooperation, calling the partnership essential for regional stability.
