India has strongly criticised the Trump administration’s suspension of PERM applications for major technology companies, saying the move does not reflect the shared ambitions of India and the United States. The Ministry of External Affairs called US Vice President JD Vance’s description of foreign workers as “indentured servants” deeply offensive, citing its colonial-era connotations. India clarified that PERM is distinct from the H-1B visa programme and that the suspension does not automatically affect existing H-1B visas. The move has raised concerns over Indian IT firms, skilled-worker mobility and the broader India-US relationship.
