Tension gripped central Delhi after a large-scale demolition drive cleared illegal encroachments on government land adjoining a mosque. Officials said the mosque itself, spread over 0.0195 acres, is legal, but more than 4,000 square yards of adjacent Ramlila Maidan land had been encroached upon. Acting on court-backed orders, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi demolished unauthorised structures, including a banquet hall, a library, and a diagnostic centre. The operation, carried out overnight with over 30 bulldozers, sparked clashes as some individuals resorted to stone pelting, prompting the Delhi Police to use tear gas to disperse the crowd. An FIR has been registered against unidentified persons, several detentions have been made, and CCTV and body-camera footage is being analysed as authorities say the situation is now under control.
