Canada-Finland Partnership Begins On New Arctic Icebreaker
Construction has officially begun on the 'Polar Max', the first Canada-bound icebreaker to be built in Finland. The steel-cutting ceremony in Helsinki marks the start of a trilateral partnership, known as the ICE Pact, which also includes the United States. The hull will be built in Finland and then transported to Canada for completion by 2030, in a move ministers say will help Canada assert its sovereignty and security in the increasingly accessible Arctic region.
