For the third straight day, there were violent protests in Assam and Tripura against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. Many people in the North-East fear that the Bill will pave the way for a wave of illegal migrants to settle there and take away their livelihoods. In Dispur, protestors set buses on fire while in Guwahati, they burnt down a billboard for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's summit meeting with Japan's PM Shinzo Abe scheduled in the city for this weekend. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was stranded at the airport for over an hour as the demonstrations grew in the city and outside the state assembly. Police opened fire to disperse the crowds, many of whom are university students. The Army has deployed two columns to the Kanchanpur and Manu areas of Tripura while two are on standby in Assam.
