The Saudi-backed government which rules parts of Yemen said on Tuesday it urgently needs a $2 billion deposit pledged by Riyadh in November, to stabilise a currency that hit new lows this week and save its people from starvation.

Oil prices fell on Monday as the Greek debt crisis helped boost the dollar, making fuel more expensive to holders of other currencies, and as United Nations talks offered a chance for peace in Yemen where crude exporter Saudi Arabia is involved in a civil war.

The dollar stood was at 119.17 yen after pulling back from a five-week trough of 118.33 struck overnight against the yen, a safe-haven currency that attracts bids in times of geopolitical tension.
