Ulfa Peace Deal

A tripartite peace deal between the Centre, the Assam government, and the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) has been signed in Delhi, bringing the curtains down on one of the biggest insurgent groups in the northeast region.

ULFA emerged with the objective of establishing an independent sovereign state for the indigenous Assamese people.

The Centre is today set to sign a peace deal with the pro-talk faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), marking a significant breakthrough in the decades-old problem of insurgency in the northeast.

The Centre has almost finalised a peace deal with the pro-talk faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom, or ULFA, and the pact is likely to be signed on December 29, government sources told NDTV.

After the Bodo peace deal, the centre will now try and fast track the ULFA peace deal. The Assam government is soon going to discuss the status of the ULFA peace talks, which are believed to be in a very advanced stage, Assam cabinet minister Himanta Biswa Sarma indicated.

It was a swap after all. In exchange for Anup Chetia, founder member of the banned separatist group, ULFA, India on Thursday deported a man wanted in Bangladesh for the murder of seven people in April 2014. He had been arrested in Kolkata last June for illegal entry.
