Transgender Rights In Kerala

The alleged denial of permission to solomnise the wedding of a transgender-couple in a temple here has triggered a row in the district as several members of the marginalised community criticised the management of the place of worship.

LGBT campaigners urged state governments on Monday to "learn a lesson" from Kerala after authorities in the southern state said they would cover the cost of gender reassignment surgeries. Kerala's chief minister said his government would pay Rs 2 lakh to allow people to have the procedure, the second state to do so after neighbouring Tamil Nadu.

Kerala has unveiled a transgender policy, becoming the first state in India to do so. The policy aims to give 25,000 transgender people in the state a platform to eventually be able to demand a right to equality, dignity, development and expression, the government says.

Batting for equal rights to the transgenders, Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva, who introduced the private memer's bill in support of the community, today said the centuries old stigma attached with them must stop now.
