Sarpanch Slaps Woman

Police in Punjab lathicharged protesting teachers and arrested three of them when they tried to gherao Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in Muktsar district. Six teachers, including two woman, were injured in the lathicharge.

Balwinder Singh, the Akali Dal sarpanch who brutally slapped a woman teacher at a public function in Punjab yesterday, was arrested this evening under the provisions of section 323 (slapping) and 341 (wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code. Mr Singh was, however, bailed out within hours of his arrest after a bond of Rs. 50,000 was deposited.

A Sarpanch in Muktsar district slapped a woman teacher, even as dozens of policmen watched silently. Though they did pull the Sarpanch away before he could inflict further damage the woman, who was demanding permanent jobs for teachers like her.
