Drugmakers globally are racing to produce a vaccine for Zika, a mosquito-borne virus that has been linked to severe birth defects.

Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccines division of Sanofi, on Wednesday said the Food and Drug Administration of Philippines has granted marketing approval to its Dengvaxia vaccine to be licensed for the prevention of dengue in Asia.

Sanofi India shares advanced nearly 5 per cent to hit intraday high of Rs 4,450 after the Mexican government approved the world's first anti-dengue vaccine developed by France-based Sanofi Pasteur which is an arm of the India-listed Sanofi India.

At a time when India is struggling with rising number of dengue cases with each passing year, the Mexican government has approved the world's first anti-dengue vaccine which is designed to protect people in the 9-45 age group from nine to 45 years from all four subtypes of the virus.

Slapped with a penalty of nearly Rs 61 crore by the Competition Commission of India (CCI), GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals said on Monday that it would review the order and consider all options, including filing an appeal.

Sanofi has invested more than $1.7 billion in the past 20 years in developing the vaccine, which is several years ahead of potential competitors. The firm has built a dedicated factory near Lyon in southern France with capacity to produce 100 million doses a year.

The vaccine protects against three virus strains, but the lack of protection against the fourth means a commercial launch could likely be in 2015.

The additional cases will generate revenue of Rs 25,000 crore, ministry officials said, excluding the Rs 20,000 crore the government hopes to recover from British telecom operator Vodafone group. Euro Pacific Security and Pan Asia have already paid the taxes as per the IT Department’s tax demand, ministry officials said.

The transaction that took place between the sellers and Sanofi Pasteur in 2009 for the acquisition of the French company ShanH was subject to taxation in France, under the French law.
