Days after Rakesh Maria was controversially transferred as Mumbai Police chief in the middle of the Sheena Bora murder investigation, Maharashtra's seniormost police officer has come out in his support.

After being stripped of powers to transfer police officers of lower ranks by the Maharashtra government, the state's Director General of Police has objected to what he calls political interference, and is said to be considering quitting, according to sources.

The man who stood up to US Secret Service Agents and refused to take orders from them when US President Barack Obama visited India in November 2010, will be serving as Director General of Police (DGP) of the state for the next three years.

Senior IPS officer Sanjeev Dayal today took over as the new Director General of Police (DGP) in Maharashtra, after which he listed tackling terrorism and Naxalism as his top priority. Mr Dayal, the senior-most IPS officer in the state, succeeded K Subramaniam, who retired today. He was Director General (ACB) before taking over as DGP.
