The design of these notes to be issued now is similar in all respects to the Rs 10 denomination bank notes in Mahatma Gandhi Series- 2005' issued earlier, the notification said.

"The RBI will shortly issue rupees 20 denomination banknotes incorporating rupee symbol, with inset letter E, in the Mahatma Gandhi Series-2005 bearing the signature of Raghuram G Rajan, Governor," RBI said in a release.

Already credited with causing a bounce in India's battered financial markets, Raghuram Rajan, the new Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, was told today that he had become a "sex symbol" after just a week in the job.

The Reserve Bank will shortly issue Rs 100 notes, which will have the rupee symbol.

The Rupee will soon have a symbol to represent it like the dollar $ or the euro € or the pound £ do. The Cabinet is expected to clear a design tomorrow. It will be the Hindi letter Ra with two lines. So far, five designs have been shortlisted from a competition and all new notes will bear the design finally approved.
