Two letters, purportedly exchanged by Maoist leaders, indicated plans to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President Amit Shah and Home Minister Rajnath Singh, leading to police action against prominent left-wing activists in several states and the arrest of five of them for suspected links with the Maoists, security officials said.

Maoist ideologue and revolutionary writer P Varavara Rao was arrested from his home in Hyderabad today for his alleged involvement in a plot to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The arrest came after a raid at his home and the houses of his family members and friends, including a journalist, by the Pune Police.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh said the security of Prime Minister Narendra Modi had been beefed up following reports of Maoists planning an attack on him.
