Pil Against Sedition Law

The Supreme Court today stayed the country's colonial-era sedition law after the Centre's u-turn in the last hearing. The Centre had argued against it saying it can't be stayed based on just a few Public Interest Litigations (PIL).

Supreme Court agreed to examine a plea by an ex-army officer challenging the Constitutional validity of the sedition law on grounds that it causes "chilling effect" on speech and is an unreasonable restriction on free expression, a fundamental right.
