Punjab's ruling party and BJP ally Akali Dal today cancelled a planned congregation of the Sikhs, opposing the Haryana government's plan to take over the running of Gurudwaras there, after the highest religious body of Sikhs, the Akal Takht stepped in.

In a bid to deescalate rising tension, the Akal Takht today directed that the planned Sikh congregations by ruling Akali Dal in Amritsar and in Karnal tomorrow against the Haryana government's move to create a separate gurudwara management committee in the state be called off.

The water level at Bhakra dam has reached an all time high, prompting the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) today to issue a warning to the Punjab government that it would be releasing "excess" water into Satluj and Beas rivers in the next few days.
