Pakistan Economic Woes

Amid the crippling economic woes in Pakistan, the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) completed its first review of the country's economic reform programme and allowed the immediate disbursement of USD 700 million.

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) received $1 billion from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) following an agreement with the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), to help bridge Islamabad's current account deficit.

Pakistan and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) were facing differences over tough conditionalities on key areas of a bailout programme, including further increase in energy prices, more taxes and complete disclosure of Chinese financial support, a Minister said in Islamabad.

Pakistan has not formally approached the International Monetary Fund for financial assistance despite its economic woes, the IMF's chief economist said on Tuesday.

America's top diplomat says the US relationship with Pakistan "could not be more important" as the Islamic republic grapples with economic and security woes and regional stability.
