Candidates for a total of 77 posts, including one Nagar Panchayat president, have been elected unopposed in the second phase of the ongoing urban local body elections in Uttar Pradesh, the State Election Commission said.

With results from the Gadchiroli district announced on Thursday, the BJP maintained its top position in Maharashtra nagar panchayat elections by winning a total of 419 out of 1,791 seats.

Election results for 106 urban local bodies - nagar panchayats, or government bodies for areas with a small population - in Maharashtra are being declared on Wednesday.

Polling is underway today in 102 nagar panchayats in 32 districts of Maharashtra, with the election being held without the reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

A head constable posted at the Vijay Nagar Police Stationwas on Saturday suspended for allegedly terrifying and forcing villagers to cast their votes in favour of his relative during panchayat elections here, officials said.

The newly elected Firozabad Zila Panchayat has passed a proposal to rename the district Chandra Nagar, according to officials.
