Maoists In Orissa

Two Maoists, allegedly involved in several incidents of violence including murder, were arrested from Silakota forests in Malkangiri district, police said on Saturday.

The day-long bandh called on Thursday by Maoists in the Andhra Orissa Border (AOB) area to protest against the recent encounter in Chhattisgarh failed to evoke any response.

The Central Committee of the CPI-Maoist has come out openly in defence of the three abductions by Maoist groups in Odisha and Chhattisgarh saying these were not abductions but arrests carried out by the 'people' to put forth their long standing collective demands and as a reaction to the ongoing state repression unleashed against them.

There is no word yet on the kidnapped Italians who are being held hostage by the Maoists in Odisha's Kandhamal district. One of the two abducted men, Boscusco Paolo, has been visiting Odisha since 1999 and runs a travel agency in Puri that takes foreign tourists on tribal tours.
