Maoists holding BJD MLA Jhina Hikaka on Wednesday refused to free him unless 30 rebels, including one accused of killing 55 policemen, were released, while another group which abducted Italian Paolo Bosusco said it was awaiting the agreement struck with the government.

Odisha hostage crisis: Govt gives in to Maoist demands for release of Italian national

With the Maoists' 96-hour deadline drawing to a close, the Odisha government has finally given to the ultras' demand for the release of the abducted Italian national, Paolo Bosusco. With this, Mr Bosusco is expected to walk free soon after spending over three weeks in captivity.

Even as talks were in progress for the release of two Italians abducted by Maoists in Odisha, the rebels shot dead a Sub-Inspector of police in Malkangiri district today, police said.

Maoists offer to release one of the two kidnapped Italians

The Maoists have offered to release one of the two Italians held captive by them if two of their demands, including release of some rebels, were met, as the Odisha government asked its mediators to contact their counterparts chosen by the captors.
