Manipur Oil Leak

The gates of a dam in Manipur were shut today after a black, oil-like substance was found in a key river in Imphal East district, sparking concerns over possible water contamination.

The oil leak from a defunct heavy fuel power plant in Manipur's Leimakhong on Wednesday happened allegedly after "incidents of theft and burglary" at the abandoned facility, according to a police complaint filed by the Manipur State Power Co. Ltd.

A first information report (FIR) has been filed against unknown people a day after oil leaked into a river and streams from a defunct heavy-oil power station in Manipur's Leimakhong area.

The Manipur government has issued an alert over "leakage of heavy fuel" from a power station. The state government has said the leak led to a spillover into the streams passing through Imphal Valley, such as Kantosabal, Sekmai etc.
