Lokayukta Appointment In Up

Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik on Friday referred to the President another controversial bill which seeks to end the role of the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court in selection of the Lokayukta.

The Supreme Court today did not allow Uttar Pradesh (UP) government's submission to defer hearing on a plea challenging the appointment of Lokayukta as senior lawyer Kapil Sibal was not available, saying the state cannot be accommodated "beyond a point".

The swearing-in of former high court judge Virendra Singh as Uttar Pradesh Lokayukta was today deferred after his controversial appointment was challenged in Supreme Court before which the state government gave an undertaking to keep it in abeyance till the matter is decided.

The Supreme Court on Monday gave the Uttar Pradesh government two days to appoint a new anti-corruption ombudsman or Lokayukta. The top court has repeatedly directed the government to replace the existing Lokayukta but the orders have not been complied with.

Uttar Pradesh will have to wait for some more time for a Lokayukta, as the meeting held at Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's residence failed to reach a consensus with the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court questioning the validity of the process.

With the stalemate over the appointment of the Lokayukta continuing between the ruling Samajwadi Party and the Uttar Pradesh governor, Ram Naik, the government backed nominee, Justice (retired) Ravindra Singh Yadav, today decided to opt out of the race.

Justifying his decision to hold back some names sent by the Samajwadi Party government for appointing of members to the legislative council, Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik said that he was following the rule-book on the issue.

Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik today returned the file for appointment of Lokayukta to the state government saying he was not bound to accept Cabinet's recommendation and asked it to send any other name except Justice (retd) Ravindra Singh after following due procedure.
