Controversial cricket boss Lalit Modi's passport was restored by a court in Delhi in August, three years after it had been revoked owing to a whorl of allegations of his involvement in corporate corruption, money-laundering and tax evasion linked to the multi-million dollar Indian Premier League that he created.

As the ruling BJP confronts a raging controversy over Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj helping former IPL boss Lalit Modi obtain British travel papers in July last year when his passport was held by Indian authorities, a dinner at a London hotel has raised new questions for the party.

The Finance Ministry, sources said, has written to the External Affairs Ministry pointing out that Modi continues to stay in the UK for a long time even though his passport has been revoked. The matter is, however, sub-judice.
