Kottankulangara Devi Temple

A five-year-old child succumbed to her injuries last night after she was crushed under the wheels of a ceremonial chariot during the annual festival at the famous Kottankulangara temple near here, police said.

A temple in Kerala has a role to play in blurring the lines of gender. In a 19-day long festival at Kollam's Kottankulangara Devi temple, one could see hundreds of men dressed as women offering prayers to deities. Dissolving not just gender but borders, men from New Zealand and London also too took part in the ritual.

Men from across the state and now even outside it look forward to two days on the calendar of the famous Kottankulangara Devi Temple at Chavara near here for a chance to dress as women.
