The CBI has asked the government for permission to invoke the Official Secrets Act against arrested Navy officers accused of passing on confidential information about India's submarines to "unauthorised persons", sources told NDTV on Tuesday.

The Central Bureau of Investigation has filed chargesheets against six people including a serving commander and two retired Indian Navy officers for allegedly passing on confidential information about India's Kilo Class submarines.

As I write this, the young crew of an Indian Kilo-class submarine, among the oldest operational submarines in the Navy, is preparing for their next mission. Massive batteries, each weighing 900 kilos, that power all the systems onboard are being installed, food and supplies are being stocked, mechanical repairs are being carried out.

INS Sindhurakshak, the submarine which caught fire after an explosion in August 2013 while it was preparing for a sortie in the Mumbai Naval Docks, is likely to be decommissioned and scrapped by the Navy.

It has been called a "hole in the water," a submarine so quiet that detecting it is often impossible for even the most advanced navies.

INS Sindhurakshak - the Russian built diesel electric Kilo class submarine -- that blew up two years ago in Mumbai, may be put use again. Senior defence ministry officials told NDTV that the submarine is likely to be taken to sea, sunk and used as training platform for navy divers.
