Supreme Court dismisses Jagan's plea against his arrest

The Supreme Court today dismissed a petition of YSR Congress leader Y S Jaganmohan Reddy challenging his arrest in a disproportionate assets case. A bench of justices Aftab Alam and Ranjana Prakash Desai, however, sought response of CBI on a separate petition by Mr Reddy, who is an MP, seeking bail in the matter.

A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court posted to Friday the orders on the bail petition of Member of Parliament YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, who is in jail in a disproportionate assets case.The CBI court on Thursday reserved the orders after hearing the arguments of the lawyers of Jagan and the probe agency.

In a jail in Chanchalguda in Hyderabad, Jagan Mohan Reddy, as of last evening, is prisoner no 6093. A court has ordered that he will stay here till June 11, one day before by-elections are held for 18 assembly and one Lok Sabha seat.

With the arrest of YS Jaganmohan Reddy on charges of corruption, his mother Vijayamma will now campaign for the YSR Congress in next month's by-elections. Vijayamma, the honorary president of the party, was requested to do so after the party's central governing council held an emergency meeting Monday.

Congress has reacted cautiously to the arrest of YSR Congress chief Jagan Mohan Reddy in a disproportionate assets case today, saying the party will not comment on matters under investigation. Party spokesperson Manish Tiwari also dismissed the charge levelled by YSR Congress that Mr Reddy's arrest was the result of a Congress-TDP conspiracy.
