Daily commuters, office goers and students in Goa suffered as private bus operators stayed off roads across the state on Wednesday on the second day of the 48-hour nationwide trade strike called against the Centre's alleged anti-workerpolicies.

Goa government has issued directives that all buses, including those of state-run Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited (KTCL), which are more than 15 years old should be scrapped in a phased manner.

Away from public glare and pomp, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Wednesday commissioned INS Vajrakosh, a naval station near Karwar in Karnataka. Together with INS Kadamba, 20 km, away, it is now the world's largest naval base east of the Suez Canal.

Several parents in Goa today blocked the main roads and bridges across the state and allegedly pelted some buses with stones while demanding English to be made the medium of instruction and government grants for every academic year.

Goa remained completely shut except for few buses of state-owned Kadamba Transport Corporation plying on roads along with emergency services, in response to NDA's bandh call against the petrol price hike, sources said.
