Farmers Break Police Barricades

Scores of protesting farmers from Punjab and Haryana on Saturday took out protest marches against the Centre's three farm laws even as police used a water cannon to disperse cultivators as they broke barricades at the Chandigarh-Mohali border.

The Palwal police chief and another officer had a narrow escape Tuesday as some protesting farmers allegedly drove their tractors dangerously and tried to break barricades to force their way into Delhi through a non-designated route at Palwal-Faridabad border, police said.

Ahead of the big tractor rally, farmers protesting against the new agricultural laws broke police barricades this morning near Singhu border, the epicentre of the agitation that began late November, as they entered Delhi.

Protesting farmers on way to Delhi were stopped by the police in BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh. But the police, who had barricaded the road at Rampur, were forced to give way. Sources said the farmers were from the Pilibhit and Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh, and were on way to join the Punjab and Haryana farmers sitting on protest outside Delhi.

As farmers fought their way through barricades and police forces on their way to Delhi for a planned protest march, their resourcefulness in crossing one such roadblock drew praise on Twitter.
