"Ugliness" and disability are listed among the reasons for dowry demands made to the parents of a bride, in a Class 12 schoolbook in Maharashtra. The outrageous statement is part of a chapter in the sociology textbook titled "Major Social Problems in India".

A 21-year-old woman was allegedly repeatedly raped and tortured by her husband's relatives and acquaintances for dowry and was allegedly sold off for Rs 50,000 at Tyonda village in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district, police said today.
