Dalit Word Ban

The Republican Party of India, an ally of the BJP, will move the Supreme Court challenging the Bombay High Court directive against the use of the word 'Dalit' by the media, according to RPI leader and Union Minister Ramdas Athawale.

Members of the Scheduled Castes can no longer be referred to as Dalits, a new order from the Broadcasting ministry has told television channels. In a letter to private television channels on August 7, the ministry said the media "may refrain from using the nomenclature Dalit in compliance with the Bombay High Court order".

A college magazine in Kerala is back in the news, this time because students are protesting the college authorities banning words such as beef, dalit and fascism from the publication.
