American Nobel laureate Irwin Rose, a biochemist whose groundbreaking work helped in the development of treatments for cervical cancer and cystic fibrosis, died on Tuesday, the University of California, Irvine said. He was 88.

Weight loss and severe cystic fibrosis

Adults with cystic fibrosis who experience weight loss that does not involve fat tissue, or loss of fat-free mass, have more severe overall disease. Investigators have found that the loss of fat-free mass that is not obvious correlates with increased loss of bone mineral density and systemic inflammatory activity.
