Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh announced today that Maoists will release Sukma District Collector Alex Paul Menon within the next 48 hours. The government and the Maoists have signed an agreement over the release of Mr Menon, Mr Singh told the media today.

Collector abduction: Mediators return for another round of talks

Mediators BD Sharma and Professor Hargopal have returned to Raipur after holding talks with the Maoists over the release of Sukma Collector Alex Paul Menon. The two mediators were flown to Maoist stronghold Chintalnar on Saturday where they held discussions with Mr Menon's abductors.

In its attempt to free Sukma Collector Alex Paul Menon, the Chattisgarh government is willing to consider the release of those Maoists who do not have heinous and grave charges against them, sources told NDTV today. The state government is also considering the release of some tribals, who may have been allegedly arrested wrongly, the sources added.
