In Congress-ruled Karnataka, capital Bengaluru has picked the BJP again to fix its chronic civic problems, handing the party a majority in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike or BBMP, that it has controlled for the last five years.

Voting for Bengaluru's municipal body known as the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike or BBMP ended today with less than 50 per cent voter turnout, underscoring once again the city's apathy to polls.

Bengaluru is voting today to elect its civic body, amid major concerns of traffic and cleanliness faced by its residents, in a high-prestige political battle. Till 12 noon, just 11 per cent of the electorate had come out to vote.

With the municipal elections due this Saturday, the residents of Bengaluru are thinking more than usual about the civic challenges faced by the city. A garden city that first turned into the country's IT capital, became a pensioner's paradise, and is now a startup town.

With familiar-sounding promises to clear out the garbage on streets, fix traffic jams, mend potholes and clean up filthy lakes, aspirants for the Bengaluru civic polls have jumped into the fray. Their first task at hand? Raise the offensive on opponents.

This is my 31st year as an elected representative. In 1983, I was first elected as a municipal councillor in Bengaluru - also called Corporator. The day I entered the municipal corporation building a senior leader gave me a pep talk that I must stay always accessible and approachable to the common man.
