Assam Rally Violence

Hundreds of members of the Assam branches of four Manipur-linked civil society groups took out a massive rally, asking Prime Minister Narendra Modi to protect the territorial integrity of Manipur following ethnic violence.

Sporadic incidents of violence were today reported during a 12-hour Guwahati bandh called to protest the death of a farmer activist, with those enforcing the bandh trying to prevent Congress supporters from reaching the venue of Rahul Gandhi's rally in Guwahati.

Mumbai politician Raj Thackeray says he will defy a police order and will lead his party, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), in a march from Girgaum Chowpatty to the Azad Maidan, a distance of about five kms. The police has refused permission for Mr Thackeray's march; he has been allowed to hold his rally at Azad Maidan.
