Assam Liquor Tragedy Exposes Isolation, Neglect Of Tea Garden Workers

In Assam, which faced its worst liquor tragedy in which 160 people died and more than 500 were affected, many of those who survived have lost their eyesight and are dealing with major health complications. Those affected are largely from the tea garden areas of Golaghat and neighbouring Jorhat districts.

120 Assam Tea Garden Workers Dead Due To Toxic Liquor, 350 In Hospital

The number of tea plantation workers who died after consuming toxic illicit liquor in Assam has gone up to 120. More than350 people are in hospital. The deaths come less than two weeks after more than 100 people died in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand from drinking illegally produced alcohol, known locally as hooch or country liquor.

At least 32 tea plantation workers, including nine women, died in Assam from drinking toxic illicit liquor, while at least 50 have been admitted to a hospital. Four of them are critically-ill, a doctor said.
