The delivery of Kamov military helicopters to India will begin within two years of the signing of the contract, according to a top Russian official who indicated that the number of choppers to be supplied could be increased to more than 200 in the future.

Ramping up bilateral ties, India and Russia are likely to sign key defence deals worth billions of dollars tomorrow as Moscow hopes to stave off tough competition from the Americans and the Europeans to continue being New Delhi's foremost defence supplier.

India and Russia are expected to sign this weekend a "complex agreement" for production of 200 Kamov 226T helicopters domestically under a nearly $1 billion deal to replace the aging Cheetah and Chetak choppers.

Russia's Rostech State Corporation has tied up with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for manufacture of at least 200 Kamov 226T light helicopters to replace the ageing fleet of Cheetah and Chetak, in a deal estimated to be worth USD 1 billion under the 'Make in India' initiative.
