Mouni Roy was born in West Bengal's Cooch Behar district on September 28, 1985. Her grandfather Shekhar Chandra Roy was a well-known Jatra theatre artist. Mouni's mother is also a theatre artist while her father Anil Roy is an office superintendent of the Cooch Behar Zilla Parishad.
Mouni Roy did her schooling till class 12th from Kendriya Vidyalaya in Babuhat, Cooch Behar. She then pursued a mass communication course at Delhi's Jamia Millia Islamia University. She is a trained Kathak dancer.

Mouni Roy began her acting career in 2007 with Ekta Kapoor's popular show Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, in which she portrayed the role of Krishnatulsi opposite Pulkit Samrat. Mouni then participated in the first season of Zara Nachke Dikha and won the show.
Mouni Roy gained popularity after she featured in mythological series Devon Ke Dev... Mahadev from 2011 to 2014. She featured Junoon - Aisi Nafrat Toh Kaisa Ishq in 2013.
In 2014, Mouni Roy participated in the seventh season of dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa along with Punit Pathak. She survived for the full 14 weeks and finished off as a finalist.
She has also hosted the dance show So You Think You Can Dance along with Rithvik Dhanjani.
In 2015, Mouni Roy featured in Ekta Kapoor's supernatural series Naagin in which she played the role of Shivanya opposite Arjun Bijlani and Adaa Khan.
Mouni Roy, who was one of the participants in the tenth season of Bigg Boss, will now co-host the eleventh season of the show with superstar Salman Khan.

Mouni Roy will be making her Bollywood debut next year with Reema Kagti's Gold opposite Akshay Kumar. The film, which is a biopic based on the life of hockey player Balbir Singh, is scheduled for release in August 2018.
