What It Takes To Become A Modern COO And How The Chief Operations Officer Programme At IIM Calcutta Builds That Capability

As operational leadership becomes central to strategy, governance, and risk, the COO Programme at IIM Calcutta, in association with TalentSprint, Part of Accenture, reflects the changing expectations from today's COOs.

What It Takes To Become A Modern COO And How The Chief Operations Officer Programme At IIM Calcutta Builds That Capability
The programme prepares senior professionals for roles where decisions shape organisations.

Senior leadership today is being shaped by a convergence of pressures that organisations have faced at the same time in the past. Global supply chains are being restructured, regulatory oversight is intensifying, and technology is transforming how decisions are made and scrutinised. At the same time, investors, boards, and customers are demanding higher standards of transparency, governance, and corporate accountability. In this environment, operations as a function has moved decisively from the back office to the centre of enterprise strategy.

A global survey of business leaders found that 55 percent identify technology adoption as a key priority for 2026, even as many enterprises acknowledge capability gaps that make scaling digital and AI initiatives difficult. This widening gap between ambition and execution, compounded by daily operational pressures, has reshaped how organisations view the role of the COO. No longer seen merely as custodians of processes, COOs are now expected to act as enterprise stewards who connect execution with strategy, risk with growth, and technology with governance. It is in response to this reality that IIM Calcutta has launched Chief Operations Officer Programme at IIM Calcutta, offered in association with TalentSprint, Part of Accenture, as its digital delivery and outreach partner.

Why the COO role is being redefined

The COO role is being redefined because corporates today are judged as much by how they operate as by what they deliver. Decisions around supply chains, compliance, technology, people, and partnerships now carry reputational and financial consequences. What was once an execution-focused role has become central to protecting credibility, managing risk, and sustaining long-term performance. Today's COO is expected to think at an enterprise level, anticipate pressure points, and take responsibility for how the organisation stands up to scrutiny over time.

Professor Peeyush Mehta, Programme Director, IIM Calcutta, explains the context that led to its creation, "Leadership across firms, they are witnessing several complexities in business models, whether it is in the form of geopolitical situations, transformational impact of AI, or overall supply chain design, and in general the challenges due to sustainability and so on. This is where we thought that we need to design a more cutting-edge programme where the COO's role becomes very critical."

A Programme designed for enterprise leadership

The Chief Operations Officer Programme prepares senior professionals for roles where decisions shape organisations, not just functions. Participants gain clarity on how capital allocation, governance structures, regulatory risk, and operational execution interact at the top level. Through academic work and real-world application, they learn to question inherited thinking, justify strategic choices, and lead decisively under pressure.

Professor Amit Dhiman, Programme Director, IIM Calcutta, highlights the strategic orientation of the initiative by saying, "Some institutions might be more specialised in one particular area such as operations, finance, or marketing. IIM Calcutta has been a general management institution, and that is particularly relevant for senior leadership in operations when we are looking at COOs stepping into boardrooms. The key agenda of this course is to create a non-negotiable alignment between business strategy and functional decisions that add value to the firm."

The IIM Calcutta advantage behind the programme

IIM Calcutta's academic standing provides a strong foundation for the Chief Operations Officer Programme and adds long-term credibility to its learning outcomes.
