To Prime Minister Modi, a Message From a Dharavi Man

To Prime Minister Modi, a Message From a Dharavi Man

"I came to Bombay as a tourist, but when I saw that there were so many opportunities for work - I decided to make the move," says this 'Human of Bombay' who runs a successful business out of Dharavi, one of the world's largest slums.

The unnamed gentleman, a leather worker, spoke on the Facebook page about how he saw Dharavi not just as dirty and crowded but as a space where he could build a future. "Here I found space, all the materials I require and a place to stay. People look at Dharavi as dirty - but it's home to thousands of people like me, who had no other way."

Don't turn your nose up at Dharavi and its people, he says. "My products are sold internationally from this 10 by 10 room in a slum, but when it's worn abroad do people discriminate based on where it was made?"

Today, not only are his products sold abroad, he's also enrolled his son in a computer course so their business can be taken online.

Lastly, this voice from the small scale business strata has a message for Prime Minister Modi. "Chote business ko bhi badhao, Sarkar," he urges, "India ussi tarah badega!"

Mr Modi, are you listening?
