We all know at least one such woman: the kind who manages to look like a million bucks no matter what she wears. But when you decode her style, you realise that everything she's wearing could have come out of your own wardrobe. Which makes you wonder, why didn't you think of pairing this with that, or layering it like she did. Fashion, after all, is one part what you have and two parts how you wear it. So what does she have, that you don't? The answer is: style. Like Rachel Zoe famously said, "Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak." But hey, we get it, sometimes, it takes a while to figure out who you are and what you want to say with the clothes you wear. Some of us spend a lot more time in the WIP-stage of personal style than the others. And that's okay. So, even as you go through the trial and error process of arriving at your style sensibilities, here are a few simple tips and tricks to help you master and manipulate the basics to help you along the way.
Master Your Basics
All you've got to do is throw on your favourite tee over your comfortable denims and a pair of kitten heels. Roll up your shirt sleeves and add a neck scarf to it. Adding a neck scarf will not only make you look and feel glam, it's the easiest way to go without accessories and still look effortlessly chic.
Layers, Layers, Layers!
Amp up your look by adding layers. A slinky top over a shirt in a solid colour, or a corset over your crisp white shirt, or your mini skirt over a long shirt... The permutations and combinations are endless. Just start experimenting with layers, however you like it. You never know what you might come up with. And you might just end up starting a whole new trend, all on your own!
The Half Tuck Shirt
Do the half tuck, schoolgirl way of wearing your shirt. It was cool then, it's cool now. And if you don't know what the half tuck is, just tuck in the front of your shirt and leave the rest out for effect and instantly become a street style star. Add some diamonds to the look and you're ready to channel some girl boss vibes. Buy these earrings to nail the look.
Drape your Jacket
When you believe in fashion, not function, just drape your jacket or overcoat over the shoulders instead than wearing them through the sleeves, and become infinitely more stylish.
Know How To Coordinate
Choose one colour for your outfit and add clothes to the look in its shades to colour-block like a boss. For example, if you're choosing red as the primary colour for your look, go with accessories in ruby, mahogany, rose, blush, etc. tones to add character and depth to your look, while maintaining its colour-blocking style. Do not dress up in one shade throughout, more often than not, it ends up looking tacky.
Cuff Your Jeans
This is a perfect way to wear your denims in all seasons. Just cuff them up to your ankle. Wear them with sneakers, mules or even ankle booties. If you prefer slides or slip-ons, or favour a more laidback bohemian style, accessorise with chunky anklets or toe rings. Folding up the jeans is the go-to styling trick that all fashion-forward women -- no matter what their style -- swear by.
So ladies, are you ready to slay your street style?
