Indefinite bus strike in Kolkata from October 9

Joint Council of Bus Syndicate, a leading bus operators' association, has called an indefinite strike in the state from October 9 demanding hike in fares.

General Secretary of the syndicate Sadhan Das told PTI that buses would be off the roads both in the city and state from that day.

He said that after the recent diesel price hike, it was becoming completely unviable to ply the buses at old fares for which the syndicate had approached the West Bengal government for a hike in ticket prices.

With the government still undecided over fare hike, Mr Das said that there was no other option but to go for an indefinite strike.

He said that if the government did something relating to fare hike within October 9, then the syndicate might call off the strike.

The syndicate has around 34,000 buses under its fold.
