The long walks of Teddy on his wheels and advocate Shaleen Mathur are a rare sight in Kerala's Kozhikode district. Teddy is a stray, rescued with his two legs paralysed two years ago.
But Mr Mathur, after some internet search, got a friend to improvise a low-cost wheelchair for Teddy - two of them in last two years.
As Mr Mathur begins to strap Teddy on, resting his hind legs on the makeshift wheelchair, it seems cumbersome. But he believes it makes Teddy happy, allowing him easier movement and the long walks.
"I approached people for help, they said no. Then one person made these dog wheelchairs you see. It's ok. It cost me Rs 1,500 each. I can't afford proper designs, as you see in the US, but I would appreciate it if someone brings Teddy one," said Mr Mathur, unstrapping Teddy.
It's not just Teddy and him -- his house is home to 6 dogs and 16 cats, many of them rescued.
Nothing has deterred the 44-year-old advocate from his mission -- limited financial resources, space constraint and an ailing mother. He spends around Rs 15,000 every month on their food.
"Only death can end the loving relationship we share. Here, the dogs even allow the cats to eat from their plate. They rarely fight," Mr Mathur said.
