A woman has been hospitalised in Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh after she jumped from the terrace of her two-storey home following an altercation with her husband. In a chilling video, the husband is seen repeatedly daring the woman to jump off, till she eventually does it. She lands hard on the ground and suffers injuries.
Archana was married to Sonu six years ago and the couple has two children, aged four and two. Her family has said they spent nearly Rs 10 lakh on the wedding, but Archana's in-laws were not happy with the dowry. They wanted her family to pay Rs 5 lakh and also gift a Royal Enfield motorcycle. Archana was being mentally and physically tortured over this dowry demand, her family has said.
In a complaint to the police, Archana's brother, Ankit, has also alleged that Sonu's brother, Pramod, had been sexually harassing Archana. When she complained to Sonu and his mother, Nehni Devi, they told her not to talk about it.
"On September 1, her in-laws threatened to kill my sisters' children. My sister said she would jump off the roof. And they egged her on. A neighbour shot a video and sent it to us. My sister's in-laws tortured her mentally and drove her to the edge. She has suffered serious injuries," Archana's brother has said in the complaint.
According to the police, the incident has been reported in Dakauli village in the Gonda area. Circle Officer Mahesh Kumar said, "The woman jumped off the roof after her husband dared her. She has been hospitalised and a medical examination has been conducted. We have recorded her statement and registered a case under relevant sections."
The video shows the husband repeatedly asking the woman to jump off. When she does and lands hard, a man is seen thrashing her again. A child is heard crying "mummy mummy".
Police have also stated that they are examining the video as part of the investigation.
