After a day-long marathon meeting with Punjab Congress leaders in Chandigarh, senior party leaders KC Venugopal and Sachin Pilot on Monday sought to project unity within the state unit amid concerns over factionalism ahead of the November 4 campaign launch.
Addressing a press briefing after the meeting, Venugopal described Rahul Gandhi's November 4 visit to Punjab as a potential turning point for the party.
“Rahul Gandhi coming to Punjab on November 4 will be a turning point for Punjab,” Venugopal said.
Rejecting the suggestion of authoritarian functioning within the party, he asserted, “There will be no dictatorship in the party.”
Acknowledging differences among leaders, Venugopal said, “There are differences of opinion, but we will fight together.”
“We are all together, and there is no need to give instructions to anyone,” he added.
Pilot, meanwhile, cited the leaders' informal interactions during the day to underline his claim that the state unit was united.
“Today, we had lunch at Partap Singh Bajwa ji's place. Pargat Singh's car was there, and Raja Warring and Charanjit Singh Channi were sitting together. So, we are all together,” Pilot said.
The remarks came after intensive deliberations involving senior Punjab Congress leaders in Chandigarh, as the party leadership attempts to contain factional tensions before launching its campaign on November 4.
The leadership's public show of unity appeared aimed at sending a message that differences within the Punjab Congress would not derail its political preparations. However, whether the assurances translate into lasting coordination among the party's competing factions remains to be seen.
